Put your running or walking shoes on and head to Prineville, Oregon on June 5, 2010 for the 17th annual Prineville Hotshot 5K and 8K Memorial Run and Walk to honor the 14 firefighters who lost their lives on Storm King Mountain on July 6, 1994. Nine of the 14 people who lost their lives that day were members of the Prineville Hotshots. Following the tragedy, the Prineville community and family members of the 14 came together and began the annual “Prineville Hotshot Memorial Run” to honor those lost.
A Wildland Firefighters Monument, erected by families of the fallen, stands in downtown Prineville’s Ochoco Creek Park, where photos and biographies of the 14 Storm King victims sit on rocks among aspens. A path of marble winds to a bronze sculpture by David Nelson, depicting three firefighters in a snag.
Proceeds from the Hotshot Memorial Run go toward the maintenance of the monument and to the Wildland Firefighter Foundation, which offers support of all kinds to the families of injured or fallen firefighters.
